What is the difference between a treated insulation vs. a pesticide (or EPA-registered insulation)? There are several insulation products on the market today which indicate that the insulation can kill insects. However, simply because the insulation is treated with some chemical or EPA-registered pesticide, does it control pests? Unfortunately for consumers and the pest management professionals that offer these types of insulation, the claims are false. There is no scientific research or proven efficacy data provided. Why, then, would they muddy the marketing waters? Let’s take a deeper look.

What is a treated insulation?

Some companies add an EPA-registered pesticide to their insulation to “treat” the insulation and claim that this will “protect” the home.

In professional terms, treated articles are those products, like insulation, that are treated with chemical or an EPA-registered pesticide for the sole purpose of protecting the product (insulation) itself from damage – NOT the structure of the home. The chemicals are simply added to pass the product’s flame retardancy and mold tests. Herein lies the rub.

False or cleverly exaggerated marketing claims can destroy a company’s reputation and, in some cases, provide costly outcomes for the customers who install these ‘treated’ articles in their home. Let’s be fair, as an insulation, treated articles work. As a pesticide, they wouldn’t harm a fly.

You deserve more!

The product, Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP®) Insulation is an EPA-registered pesticide. Because the insulation is a pesticide, it can promise to control all the insects on its label (Ants, Booklice, Centipedes, Cockroaches, Crickets, Darkling Beetles, Earwigs, Millipedes, Silverfish, Sow Bugs, and Termites including Formosan Termites) wherever applied. Why? Because the efficacy data, scientific study, and rigorous EPA vetting process has proved it to be true.

Backed by the Energy Star® Seal and Insulate mark, a UL Classification process, and an EPA Label identifying the insulation itself as a pesticide, TAP® Insulation works. In today’s marketplace, consumers are highly intelligent and demand products that are authentic while delivering on their promise. Because TAP® Insulation is an EPA registered pesticide, it is only available from and can only be installed by licensed pest management professionals. Treated insulation, on the other hand, can be obtained and installed by anyone.
